The Ledger Nano X was released in Spring 2019 by Ledger, the cryptocurrency hardware wallet company based in France. The Ledger Nano X is a new-and-improved model of the Ledger Nano S, boasting some great improvements.

In this Ledger Nano X Review post you’ll find:

Ledger (the company)

Ledger is the company behind the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet. Ledger was launched in 2014 by 8 experts with complementary backgrounds in embedded security, cryptocurrencies and entrepreneurship. The company has grown to over 130 employees in Paris, Vierzon and San Francisco. They have clients in 165 countries and sold over 1.5 million Ledger hardware wallets.

This is a company that has been around for a long time by cryptocurrency industry standards. They are one of the few companies in the cryptocurrency space that has a record for high integrity and quality products and services.

The mission statement of Ledger:

We aim at securing the new disruptive class of crypto assets: Financial assets like cryptocurrencies or Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), Data assets like sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) devices or machine to machine, and Digital identities like second-factor authentication or passwordless login.

Ledger Live App

Ledger Live is the App that is designed for the Ledger Nano S and Ledger Nano X hardware wallets. It has an intuitive, clean design with a simple interface. The Ledger Live App is widely compatible with Mac OS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android.

Specifically, with the Ledger Nano X, there is a mobile version of the Ledger Live App that accesses your Ledger Nano X via the Bluetooth connection. The

Ledger Live App Features:

  • Send cryptocurrency
  • Receive cryptocurrency
  • Manage multiple accounts
    • Unlimited accounts
    • Full transaction history
    • Detailed Transaction information
    • One-click account overview
    • Add new or existing accounts
  • Track your portfolio using various currencies
    • USD, EUR, CAD, AUD, GBP, JPY, HKD, MXN, KRW, NZD, RUB (… more)
    • BTC
    • Live, real-time portfolio balances and updates.
  • Buy 100s of cryptocurrencies/tokens from links within the app
  • Mobile feature for Android and iOS, integrated with Bluetooth technology on the Ledger Nano X

The Ledger Live App is an independent stand-alone software that is not a browser client. This makes it more secure against, and less susceptible to, third party policy/software changes as well as hacker attempts.

What is the Ledger Nano X?

The Ledger Nano X is a Bluetooth enabled secure device that stores your private keys. It boasts state-of-the-art security, with a certified secure element chip within the device, your private keys never touch the Internet. The Bluetooth connection is encrypted to prevent hacks.

The Ledger Nano X device has a larger display screen than the Ledger Nano S and supports two buttons to interact with the device. Additionally, the Ledger Nano X can support up to 100 cryptocurrency apps on the device at any given time, giving you significantly greater flexibility and ease of use compared to the limited 3-4 apps on the Ledger Nano S.

The Ledger Nano X also supports U2F functionality and on-device address verification.

I’ve heard of many concerns over the security of the Ledger Nano X due to its Bluetooth capability. The Ledger Team has assured its customers that the private keys to your crypto are not directly accessible via the Bluetooth feature.

The private keys never leave the secure chip, therefore Bluetooth communication (BLE) does not expose the Ledger Nano X to any additional security threat. The BLE connection is end-to-end encrypted to protect user privacy. In the unlikely case, the BLE transport was to be compromised, an attacker would never be able to extract private keys or make users sign a transaction they do not wish to sign.

Ledger Nano X FAQ

If you still harbour concerns over the Bluetooth security you can turn off/disable the Bluetooth feature, in which case it works very similarly to the Ledger Nano S, but with the improved app capacity, larger screen, etc.

Supported Cryptocurrencies

Over 1100 supported cryptocurrencies.

Keep in mind that one of the largest advantages of the Ledger Nano X over the Ledger Nano S is that the X has the ability to store many, many more cryptocurrency support apps, up to 100 applications simultaneously. On the Ledger Nano S you can only actively keep 3-4 supported cryptocurrency apps on the device at any given time.

  • Bitcoin – BTC
  • Ethereum – ETH
  • Litecoin – LTC
  • XRP – XRP
  • EOS – EOS
  • Cardano – ADA
  • Tron – TRX
  • IOTA
  • Binance Coin – BNB

… and hundreds more.

  • Neo – NEO
  • Dash – DASH
  • Dogecoin – DOGE
  • Ethereum Classic – ETC
  • Stellar – XLM
  • Bitcoin Cash – BCH
  • Monero – XMR
  • Zcash – ZEC
  • Tezos – XTZ

There are so many cryptocurrencies supported that it would be infeasible to list them all. Not to mention that it is likely over 80-90% of all cryptocurrencies created will fail. Regardless, the Ledger Nano X can support you in your wildest cryptocurrency endeavours and hold many apps on the device simultaneously.

What’s In The Box?

Very clean, simple design. Easy to set up with very few things required.

  • 3 recovery sheets
  • 1 keychain strap

Ledger Nano X Price

Ledger Nano X Price

CAD $159

USD ~ $122

EUR ~ €108

GBP ~ £98

^ These are ROUGH prices (rounded UP) based on the exchange rate from the Canadian Dollar price that I based it on (CAD $159). These prices do not include your local taxes or any shipment/duty fees that may apply.

While these prices are higher than the Ledger Nano S, it is still a small price to pay to provide you with financial sovereignty and peace of mind to store your cryptocurrency assets off targeted cryptocurrency exchanges.

Ledger Nano X Pro’s and Con’s

The Ledger Nano X is essentially an improvement on the limitations of the Ledger Nano S. Some of the obviously improved Pros are…

Pros of Ledger Nano X:

  • Bluetooth capability
  • Mobile Ledger Live App
  • Larger Screen
  • Up to 100 cryptocurrency apps simultaneously
  • PIN protected
  • Secure chip element
  • U2F functionality

Cons of Ledger Nano X:

  • Still, a rather small device and screen, even though it is larger than the Ledger Nano S.

So from my Ledger Nano S Review, you can check out the pros and cons section and see that 2/3 cons were remedied with the Ledger Nano X (small memory capacity and lack of mobile/wireless compatibility).

Ledger Nano X User Reviews

Based on 587 reviews, the Ledger Nano X has scored an astounding 4.9/5 stars, based on the reviews on the Ledger website.

4.9/5 Stars

Five Star Reviews of the Ledger Nano X

Four Star Reviews of the Ledger Nano X

Three Star Reviews of the Ledger Nano X

Two Star Reviews of the Ledger Nano X

I did not include One Star Reviews because they were primarily regarding shipping which I don’t think is an accurate assessment of the actual Ledger Nano X device.

Many of the reviews have left some constructive criticisms, which I’m sure the Ledger Team is already working to address in their next model of the Ledger Nano hardware wallets, as they addressed the main Ledger Nano S concerns with the Ledger Nano X.

Markshire Crypto Conclusion On Ledger Nano X

Well, I was already in love with the Ledger Nano S. And the Ledger Nano X truly does improve on some of the main limitations of the Ledger Nano S, so I honestly don’t have many negative critiques of it.

Overall, the Ledger Nano X is a compact, modern design cryptocurrency hardware wallet that supports over 1100 cryptocurrencies (up to 100 cryptocurrency apps simultaneously), has U2F functionality, Bluetooth capability, PIN protected, passphrase option (on Ledger Live Application) and continued support from the Ledger Company.

The Ledger Nano X is a great buy.

I would 100% buy the Ledger Nano X. I currently own the Ledger Nano S (x2), a BitBox and the Trezor Model T. My next hardware wallet will most definitely be the Ledger Nano X.

Ledger seems to be a company that listens to the customer’s feedback and adapts to fit those needs. Last I looked they sold over 1.5 million Ledger hardware wallets, so I’m sure they’re approaching or surpassed the 2 million target. With that much success, I’m sure that they’ll have the funding to continue to build, develop and improve their suite of products.
